Most Australians have a garage, spare room, or back shed that's collecting things they'll ‘deal with one day’. For many, that day never arrives, but in Darwin, they have an official day to kick you into action, taking place just before cyclone season.
If you've recently moved to Darwin, or you've found yourself wondering why your neighbours suddenly have old lounges and broken fridges sitting neatly on the verge, you're in the right place.
Here is everything you need to know about how Darwin’s annual clean-up works, what you can put out, and what your options are if you've missed collection. So, clear the clutter before the weather does it for you. Let’s get into it before the winds do.
Unlike many Australian cities that offer booked hard waste collections throughout the year, Darwin takes a seasonal approach.
Each year, the City of Darwin runs its annual pre-cyclone clean-up, giving residents the chance to get rid of bulky household waste before the wet season rolls in. It's a practical way to declutter, but more importantly, it helps remove loose items that could become dangerous during strong winds.
It’s an initiative that’s worth getting on board with, unless you’re happy for that rusty trampoline in the backyard to take a visit to the neighbour's pool during the next tropical low.

The pre-cyclone clean-up usually takes place during August and September and is available to residential properties across the City of Darwin.
Rather than collecting the whole city at once, Darwin is divided into 2 collection zones. Each zone takes around 2 weeks to complete, helping collection crews move efficiently through every suburb.
Checking your suburb before collection begins is the easiest way to avoid missing your annual pickup.
It's important to have everything ready during your designated collection period because once your street has been cleared, the trucks won't be coming back for a second lap.
Anything left on the verge after your collection has passed becomes the responsibility of the resident and may be treated as illegal dumping if you leave it out.
Note: Darwin’s August 2026 pre-cyclone clean-up has been postponed to May 2027.

The annual collection is designed for bulky household items that don't belong in your regular wheelie bin.
To make recycling easier, residents are asked to sort their items into 3 separate piles:
By separating materials before collection, different crews can collect each waste stream and divert as much as possible away from landfill.
Before you dump every rogue item on your verge, first check that it isn’t one of the prohibited items below:
These should never be placed on the verge as part of the clean-up.
Life happens. Maybe you were away, maybe the garage clean-out took longer than expected, or maybe you simply forgot until you saw the collection truck disappearing around the corner.
Outside the annual pre-cyclone clean-up, bulky waste isn't collected from the verge. If you've missed collection, you have 2 main options:

Shoal Bay does much more than send waste to landfill:
Most Darwin households that pay the waste levy through their council rates are eligible for a Shoal Bay access tag, allowing them to use the domestic entry lane.
Good to know: The tag stays with the property rather than the resident, so if you move house it remains for the next occupants.

The annual pre-cyclone clean-up is a great service, but it doesn't always line up with your plans. If you've missed your collection, have more waste than the council will accept, or simply need everything cleared sooner, Upmove’s moving teams can provide the helping hand you need.
Whether you're moving house, renovating, or tackling a major declutter, you can book one of our trusted moving teams to help remove bulky household items and unwanted furniture as part of your move or clean-out. It's a simple way to get everything sorted without waiting for next year's collection.
