Your complete post-move checklist to settle into your new home

So, you’ve got the keys. The truck has pulled away. And you’re standing in your new place surrounded by boxes and wondering where on earth to begin. This is where a proper post-move checklist will become your best friend.

While most guides jump straight to unpacking, there are actually a few simple, smarter things to do first that most people miss.

From making sure your hot water is working to essential safety checks, here’s exactly what to do after moving house so that you can feel organised, calm, and at home faster.

1. Get connected

Hand switching on circuit breaker in Australian home after movingBefore you open a single box, make sure your essential services are up and running. Nothing derails a move-in day like discovering there’s no electricity or hot water.

Check the following immediately after arriving at your new house:

  • Electricity is connected
  • Gas is active
  • Hot water is working
  • Water supply is running from all taps and showers
  • Wi-Fi is connected (this will help kids connect with their friends and settle in more easily).
  • Mobile reception is strong for everyone throughout the house.

Keep it simple and go through the list one-by-one, making notes of anything that needs to be fixed ASAP.

2. Consider decorating before unpacking completely

If you’ve been planning to repaint, update lighting or refresh styling, now is actually the perfect time. Decorating, whether small or large jobs, before unpacking means:

  • No furniture to move
  • Clear access to walls
  • Less disruption later

This is also your chance to imprint your energy into the space.

Dopamine decorating, choosing colours and styling that genuinely lift your mood, can instantly make a new house feel more like home. If you’re exploring colour ideas, you might find our guide to dopamine décor helpful.

Even simple changes like swapping cabinet handles or adding new cushions can shift the atmosphere dramatically.

3. Clean before you unpack

Woman cleaning bathroom mirror before unpacking in new homeMost people leave the cleaning for after everything is unpacked and organised, but also doing a clean before you start unloading is a game-changer.

Once cupboards are full and furniture is in place, you won’t get this kind of clear access again without going through the mission of emptying everything out again.

Focus on the areas that will soon be hardest to reach:

  • Inside kitchen cupboards and drawers
  • Pantry shelving
  • Wardrobes
  • Bathroom cabinets
  • Window tracks and sills
  • Skirting boards
  • Inside the fridge

Keep a small cleaning kit to hand at the top of your moving boxes, ideally packed separately and marked clearly for quick and easy access.

Your cleaning essentials can include:

  • Microfibre cloths
  • All-purpose spray
  • Glass cleaner
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Vacuum
  • Mop and bucket
  • Bin bags

4. Unpack with a plan

Unpacking without a clear strategy is how moving stress hits hard.

If you colour-coded boxes during packing or followed a complete moving checklist before the move, now is when it pays off.

Prioritise rooms in this order:

  1. Kitchen: Getting the kettle, toaster, and basic cookware sorted makes the first few days much smoother.
  2. Bedrooms: At a minimum, set up beds with clean linen. After a long day of moving, everyone needs a proper place to sleep – there’s nothing like slipping into freshly made beds to make you feel at home.
  3. Bathroom essentials: Toilet paper, towels, toiletries, and shower basics should be accessible immediately.
  4. Home office if you work remotely: If you’re working from home, ensure your desk, tech, and chargers are ready before your first workday.

Unpack intentionally. You don’t have to do everything at once. Tackle one space at a time and finish it fully before moving on.

5. Help kids and pets settle in

For children, that means:

  • Lots of conversations about what’s happening
  • Giving them small jobs to help them feel involved
  • Setting up their bedroom early

A beautiful approach is to bring something familiar into the first night. Some ideas include:

  • Pull out a favourite board game you haven’t played in ages
  • Open old family photo albums
  • Create connections in the new house with pieces of your old home.
  • You could even say, “You’ll never guess what I found while packing,” and surprise them with a long-forgotten cuddly toy.

Familiarity builds security.

If you’re changing schools, consider arranging a visit or tour before term starts. Ask about buddy systems for new students and introduce yourself to teachers early. New routines take time to settle.

Don’t forget about your furry friends. Pets also benefit from routine. Set up their bed, food bowls, and toys straight away to create consistency.

6. Check safety throughout the new home

Check:

  • Smoke alarms are installed and working
  • Pool fencing is secure and compliant
  • Gates latch properly
  • Locks function correctly
  • Stairs and railings are stable

If there’s a pool, ensure it’s fully fenced and meets Australian safety standards. This is especially important if you have young children.

7. Address admin

Another important part of any post-move checklist is updating your address.

Notify:

  • Banks
  • Insurance providers
  • Medicare
  • Electoral roll
  • Subscriptions and deliveries
  • Employer
  • Schools
  • Driver’s licence

Most of these can be done online or with a quick phone call. It’s a small admin task that’s easy to forget in the excitement.

8. Meet your neighbours

A quick introduction can go a long way.

You don’t need to host a barbecue on day one, but a friendly hello builds community and makes the transition feel warmer. Neighbours are often the best source of local tips about schools, shops, and services.

9. Take a breath

Light a candle. Order takeaway. Sit on the floor and soak in the newness.

Moving is a big life transition. Give yourself space to land.
