How verge collection works in every Perth local council

If you’ve ever driven around Perth and noticed a line-up of furniture on the side of the street, you’ve already been introduced to verge collection.

It’s your annual excuse to part ways with that broken chair you swore you’d fix, the mystery box in the garage, and anything else that’s been gathering dust for months.

The catch? Verge collection in Perth isn’t one simple, city-wide system. It all depends on your local council, and with 30 of them across Greater Perth, things can vary more than you might expect.

Here’s how it actually works and how to make it work for you.

What exactly is verge collection?

Verge collection is a council service that lets you place bulky household items on the verge for pickup. Think of all the things that don’t fit in your bin, and you’ve been meaning to 'deal with later'. This is later.

Common items include:

  • Old furniture that’s seen better days
  • Mattresses you don’t want to move again
  • Whitegoods like fridges and washing machines
  • Electronics and e-waste
  • Piles of garden cuttings that got slightly out of hand

If you’re from outside WA, you might know this as kerbside collection. In Perth, it’s all about the verge.

What you can (and can’t) put out

Most verge collections will take:

  • Furniture and bulky household items
  • Whitegoods (sometimes with conditions)
  • Garden waste like branches and clippings

Things that usually won’t make the cut:

  • Hazardous materials
  • Tyres and building waste
  • General bagged rubbish

If you’ve ever seen something sit on the verge long after collection day, chances are it fell into that second list.

How verge collection works in Perth

Across Greater Perth, councils generally run one of two systems: scheduled collections and booked collections.

Scheduled collections

You’re given a set window once or twice a year, and everything goes out at once. Streets fill up quickly, and if you don’t get your items out on time, you’ll miss the opportunity to clear out.

Booked collections

You choose the timing. This is becoming more common and makes things a lot easier if you’re not keen on waiting for a specific week.

Some councils also split collections into different types, usually bulk waste and green waste, which helps keep things a bit more manageable.

Jay was professional from start to finish and when you deal with him you can tell he actually cares about your bike. My MT10 and 450MT arrived safe and sound. I also liked that he was fair and honest with his pricing and didn’t just change it like other operators have done in the past. I’ll definitely use him again.
