There’s a very specific kind of panic that occurs when you notice that your entire street has old couches and tables lined up on the kerb, and that you’ve missed your scheduled council clean-up… Again.
But don’t be too hard on yourself; the council pick-up process isn’t always clear. Every council seems to have its own way of doing things. Some let you book bulky waste collection online on demand. Others run scheduled pickups. Some allow mattresses, while others want them booked separately. A few councils even offer doorstep recycling for ‘tricky’ items.
So, whether you’ve recently moved, renovated, decluttered or finally decided to clear out the junk pile colonising your spare room, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about bulky waste collection across Sydney’s 33 LGAs.
Council clean-up sounds universal, but what you can actually put out depends entirely on which of the 33 local government areas you live in. What gets picked up in Parramatta might not be treated the same way in the Northern Beaches, Blacktown or the Inner West, even if the pile looks pretty similar from the footpath.
Across most Sydney councils, the basics are fairly consistent. Bulky household items are usually accepted, including:
Some councils are a bit more particular than others. You might be asked to separate things like mattresses, metals, or e-waste into different piles. In other areas, you can put out a mixed clean-up pile as long as it meets size limits.
Then there are the universal no-gos. Most councils will not collect items from renovations, heavy works, hazardous waste or major garden overhauls.
These usually include:
When in doubt, always check your local council rules before putting anything out. It saves you from the classic Sydney kerbside heartbreak of watching the truck take half your pile and leave the rest sitting there like a public shame installation.

Sydney’s councils generally use one of two systems:
Some councils offer a mix of both. Others have different rules for houses, townhouses, apartment blocks, and larger residential buildings. The tables below group Sydney’s council clean-up services by area, so you can quickly find the rules that apply closest to you.

Before collection day, check three things:
And remember, council clean-up is not a free-for-all. The pile needs to be safe, manageable, and within your council’s rules. Basically, don’t build a mini Bondi Junction on your nature strip and hope for the best.
Council clean-up is useful, but it is not always enough. Maybe you’ve got more than council is willing to take. Maybe you missed your booking window. Maybe your apartment building has extra rules. Or maybe you have something bulky that needs to be moved now, not eventually.
That is where Upmove can help. For larger household items, furniture, appliances or bulky pieces that need to be moved without waiting for the next council collection, you can book Sydney’s best removalists. For everything council won’t take, Upmove can help move it on.
